The Regulator of Social Housing regulates registered providers of social housing to promote an efficient and well-governed sector that can deliver homes to meet a range of needs. We have a 50-year history, as the regulation function has been the responsibility of different organisations. However, in 2018 we became a standalone organisation, aligned to the Civil Service as a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities.
Our current role is primarily focussed on the economic regulation of organisations that are a mix of charities, not-for-profit companies and a small but growing number of for-profit businesses. However, we are also responsible for setting standards on the quality of homes and services that social housing tenants can expect, including tenants of private organisations and Local Authorities. Although this forms a small, but important, part of our work right now, it will become a bigger part of what we do following the publishing of the government’s social housing White Paper.
This is an exciting time for us as an organisation as the recently passed Government’s Social Housing Regulation Bill, extends our remit to include proactive regulation of our consumer standards in Local Authorities (LAs) as well as in Private Registered Providers (PRPs). This means we will have additional powers and responsibilities around the importance of safe, decent homes for social housing tenants and on landlord transparency and accountability.
We want to support you in shaping your career with us and have a dedicated Learning and Development team, where you will benefit from a positive approach to both internal and external training. You will also benefit from paid annual membership for one professional body.
We recognise the importance of having a great work-life balance, so benefit from flexible working, however this may look for you. This includes flexi-time, part-time, compressed hours or flexible start and finish times. We also operate a hybrid working model, where our staff have the opportunity to work the majority of their hours from home. On top of this, we offer enhanced maternity, adoption and parental leave, with supportive sickness absence pay.
Our values underpin everything that we do to deliver our purpose and priorities, and drive the culture that we want to work in:
We are professional and collaborative, showing respect and courtesy to colleagues and stakeholders. We embrace diversity and seek to be an inclusive and supportive organisation. We are confident in our ability to deliver effective and efficient regulation. We act with integrity to reach evidence-based decisions. We are agile and react positively to change.
