The Planning Inspectorate has a long and proud history in ensuring a fair planning system. Part of central government, we are an executive agency whose purpose is to deal with planning appeals, applications for national infrastructure, local plan examinations and other planning-related and specialist casework. We do so in a fair, impartial and open way.
Appeals – The right to appeal a planning decision made by a local planning authority is a key feature of the planning system, as is appealing when an authority is taking too long. Our inspectors make well-explained decisions on everything from individual footpaths through to large housing developments, giving all involved a fair opportunity to have their say.
Applications – The planning of new national infrastructure like roads, train lines and power stations needs expertise to balance the country’s needs and developers’ plans with the likely impacts on localities. We provide a streamlined application process, providing certainty for all involved, including ministers who make the final decision on whether a project is approved.
Examinations - Succinct and up-to-date local plans should provide a positive vision for the future of each area and a framework for addressing housing needs and other economic, social and environmental priorities. We examine whether local plans from local authorities fully meet local needs and are legally compliant.
