The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005. It is our responsibility to regulate the individuals and businesses that provide gambling in Great Britain, including the National Lottery.
We work in partnership with licensing authorities to ensure gambling businesses are compliant in order to make gambling safer and fairer.
There are two groups which form the highest level of governance for the Gambling Commission.
They ensure we are open and accountable in our work:

Committees
We have committees to ensure our decisions are made openly. Each group has specific areas of expertise for gambling-related issues.
You can also see committee membership details for our commissioners and senior leadership team.
Advisory groups
We have three expert advisory groups who provide us with independent advice to support the development of our regulatory approach. Each group is made up of different types of expertise – including academia and public health, digital and technology, and lived experience of gambling harms. You can read more about each group, its members, and its role.
Stakeholder engagement groups
We talk to a range of people who have an interest in gambling and the National Lottery to help us understand their perspectives. Occasionally we formalise this engagement by holding a forum.
Collaboration and innovation are very important to the culture here at the Commission. We use bi-annual surveys to gather colleagues’ views on how we can continue to improve as an organisation.
We also have regular communications across the organisation, and this helps to keep everyone updated on what we are doing and make sure we are regulating to the best of our ability.
There is a good balance between work and play. We have an annual conference where we all come together and the whole organisation gets involved with our seasonal activities which include Christmas movies, Halloween fancy dress and more.
Our Ways of Working apply to all colleagues to help us develop our behaviours which support our working culture. They are:
Outcome-focused: We put consumers at the heart of everything we do. We take responsibility for an issue and moving it forward. We deliver results through working collaboratively.
Reaching for ways to improve: We encourage feedback and ideas. We are committed to continuous improvement and are open to trying different ways of working. We celebrate successes and take responsibility when things go wrong.
Respectful: We recognise every colleague’s contribution. We give each other timely constructive feedback. We all encourage challenge.
