We operate a generation portfolio of sustainable biomass, hydro-electric and pumped hydro storage assets across four sites in England and Scotland. It is the UK’s largest source of renewable electricity. We also operate a global bioenergy supply business with manufacturing facilities at 13 sites in the United States and Canada, producing compressed wood pellets for our own use and for customers in Europe and Asia. Enabling a zero carbon, lower cost energy future is Drax Group’s purpose and in 2019, it announced a world-leading ambition to be carbon negative by 2030, using Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere at scale whilst delivering reliable renewable electricity.
At Drax Group, working together is vitally important in helping us achieve our vision: To be a bold, customer oriented power generation and retail business, driven by biomass innovation. To help us do this, it makes sense that everyone in our Group shares the same way of working. That’s why we have values which are common for the whole Group:
"Our Procurement team has an important role to play as Drax executes its strategy to be a carbon negative company by 2030. Working collaboratively across the business, the team will develop commercial sourcing strategies to maximise value while ensuring the right level of governance and risk management. There’s both a great opportunity and a strategic need to enhance and develop a capable, committed supply base who are prepared to invest in Drax through shared risk and reward. It’s a really exciting time for Drax - and Caroline and her team have an exciting challenge and opportunity ahead."
"I wish I could say I chose procurement as a career, but it was the other way around: procurement chose me! I’ve worked in procurement for the last 25 years or so, and l love what I do. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some great companies along the way too, in sectors including technology, retail and financial services – and since joining Drax as Procurement Director in 2021, I can now add renewable power to the list.
Drax is definitely up there in the list of the best places I’ve worked - and it’s a really exciting time to join. Enabling a zero carbon, lower cost energy future is Drax Group’s purpose, with a world-leading ambition to be a carbon negative company by 2030. We operate across three areas:
The most important thing for me is that the team is well regarded both internally and externally – providing a mix of healthy tension and challenge when appropriate - but viewed as procurement experts and trusted advisors, who are pragmatic in their approach and deliver what they say they will."
The Procurement team at Drax is responsible for all non-fuel spend globally. We’re introducing a renewed approach to procurement at Drax. Our key challenge is to ‘reset’ our internal customers’ perception and expectations of us. This will focus on the traditional areas of People, Process and Systems - and we’re adding capability and looking to make marked improvements in each of these areas. Building this capability is crucial for Drax to be able to deliver its ambitious growth plans and future focussed business strategy.
We’ll do this through a team of around 39 procurement colleagues globally, seven of which will report directly to me. Key roles in the structure will include a number of influential Procurement Lead roles, which will support Executive areas and their teams to successfully deliver their business strategies.
We need solid foundations – and to make sure we get the basics right, we’ll increase our focus on procurement performance, including systems, data, process and governance. We’ll progressively build and develop capability around supplier relationships and performance, including relationship management strategies for key suppliers and developing a deep understanding of all our suppliers through improved assurance capability. We’ll work closely with operational contract owners to create a framework that prevents value leakage from contracts, post award.
All this will allow us to:
The most important thing for me is that the team is well regarded both internally and externally – providing a mix of healthy tension and challenge when appropriate - but viewed as procurement experts and trusted advisors, who are pragmatic in their approach and deliver what they say they will.
We support everyone’s development, from the early career stages such as apprenticeships through to ongoing learning and development opportunities for everyone. These all help to promote a high performance culture across the company. We focus on improving skills, education, employability and opportunity. We focus on developing the skills and talents of our staff, and so we make opportunities for training a high priority. Everyone gets the chance to shape their careers in the way they want to progress and contribute to our continued success.
Our people are what makes us, so we place a strong emphasis on attracting, training and retaining great talent. We’re looking for inspiring, motivated people to help us. Our collaborative culture means our people feel valued and want to come to work for the good of the whole business. At Drax, hybrid working is a strategic enabler to our organisational goals and vision. It helps us to empower our colleagues to work in the most productive way possible. We are open to discussing hybrid working, so that you can be where you need to be.

As part of this, we’re focusing on understanding the existing diversity of our workforce through data collection. We’re also hosting educational sessions for all colleagues and delivering inclusive leadership development for our leaders. Every person matters – and that includes you. Every colleague can help us learn how to do things better - regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, belief or religion, age, background, culture or life circumstance.
I joined Drax in 2021, in an interim capacity. It has always been important to me that I work with businesses that have a true social conscience, and that is something that I found in Drax, both in the overarching business objectives and also the way in which we work together every day. In 2022 the opportunity to apply for a permanent role as Head of Procurement arose, which I was successful in securing. I’m proud to say that I can play a part in the Drax journey to become carbon negative by 2030, and I’m thrilled that both myself and my team are able to contribute to the strategic projects set out in becoming a leader in the flexible, zero carbon, low cost energy market.
The Procurement team operate on a global scale, working with key stakeholders across the business on some truly exciting projects. There has never been a better time to join Drax as we embark on a journey of growth, change, and innovation. We encourage new ways of thinking and fresh perspectives, with diversity and inclusion at the forefront.
If you’re looking for a fast paced, dynamic role with the opportunity to implement innovative solutions, come and chat with us; we’d love to see what you could bring to the team.
I joined Drax back in 2018 because as I always found the company at the forefront of the renewable energy agenda and wanted to set the bar in providing flexible, zero carbon, low cost energy. The company is dynamic and fast paced, which means that procurement is ever more important to build and foster relationships. The procurement team can become involved in lots of interesting projects and make a mark and has an essential role in supporting the future growth of the company.
In 2022 I was successful in securing the role of Head of Procurement Performance. This is a new role that will drive change for the team, ensuring our standards and controls are effective and efficient, whilst we maximise technology and being able to use data to better inform our decisions. The procurement team has undergone a real change and now is a great time to join the team.
Think you have what it takes? If you are looking to join a dynamic, fast paced and diverse team I would strongly recommend in coming along on our new journey and being able to develop your own growth and succeed in an exciting time for the team!
