BBC Internal Audit sits within BBC’s Quality, Risk & Assurance division which aims to keep the BBC safe, secure and well run. Our Internal Audit team ensures that the BBC’s strategic and operational risks are understood and effectively managed. Its remit is the entire BBC Group, including commercial subsidiaries. Internal Audit, via the Director of Internal Audit, maintains an independent reporting line to the BBC Audit and Risk Committee. The in-house audit team consists of c.15 staff, but draws upon a range of third party co-source providers and external subject matter experts to deliver the majority of audits.
The wider Audit and Assurance team consists of experienced and qualified audit and assurance professionals. Backgrounds vary; some have trained within a practice environment others have joined after undertaking senior roles in the BBC or elsewhere. There is a dedicated change assurance team who have a background in project and transformation delivery. The team is equally split between London and Birmingham based. Hybrid working is adopted with staff expected to attend the office two to three days a week, however flexibility is given to all staff to set their own working patterns.
The team has recently undertaken an external quality assessment with a positive outcome, staff survey results are also very high. The team is recognised within the BBC as a high performing and well respected function, trusted to provide assurance to the Board. The team connects in person with monthly team meetings and regular away days and weekly virtual meetings. There is a significant investment in training – technical and soft skills - and all staff are encouraged to be responsible for their own development plans.

Peter joined the BBC in 2012 as Head of Internal Audit for BBC's commercial subsidiary, BBC Worldwide (now BBC Studios). He took on his current role as Director of Audit and Assurance in 2016. Peter is responsible for leading all internal audit activity across the BBC Group. He is also a Governor and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and De Mointfort University.
Prior to joining the BBC, Peter held similar roles at TUI, Royal Mail and Wickes. He is a qualified internal auditor and accountant.
Ash is a qualified accountant with over 16 years of audit experience, the vast majority of which has been spent in Internal Audit. He started his career with KPMG working in both their External and Internal Audit, Risk and Compliance functions across a number of regulated and non-regulated sectors. Following his time at KPMG, he worked for Dignity Funerals as a member of their inhouse Internal Audit team, Central England Co-operative as their Head of Internal Audit and in 2023 joined the BBC.
Luc started in internal audit on a graduate scheme with a Top Ten accounting firm before moving to a Big 4 firm after graduating. He then moved to Activision Blizzard King and very much enjoyed working in a more creative environment, surrounded by great people collaborating to make top class entertainment.
When it was time to move on his priority was to find another company that also championed creativity and was full of great people. As such, the BBC was the perfect place! Having a fantastic time at the BBC so far, surrounded by a fun, welcoming team, with the opportunity to be immersed in the creative output of the BBC, whether by performing audits on-set or by working at Broadcasting House.
Karima joined the BBC in 2022 as a Senior Internal Auditor, bringing valuable experience from their previous role as an external audit principal at the National Audit Office. Karima’s academic background includes a PhD in Biochemistry, which has equipped them with a unique analytical perspective. At the BBC there is satisfaction in delivering audits independently across the diverse sectors of the business. Every audit is different, keeping the role fresh and exciting. The challenging nature of this work, paired with the friendly and supportive audit and assurance team, makes the role both rewarding and fulfilling.
Millie joined the BBC as a Project Assurance Manager in June 2023 having previously worked in and with various Civil Service and local government bodies in both project delivery and assurance. She is part of a small team of project assurance specialists within the Audit and Assurance function, responsible for providing assurance on some of the largest and strategically important projects in the BBC. She finds that the best thing about working for the BBC is the variety of exciting projects there are to assure, from flagship programme set redevelopments, to international BBC website re-launches, to Eurovision.
