How is technology changing the way we work?

Whilst the prospect of automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a popular topic of discussion for well over a decade, there has been a deluge of new generative AI in recent years that has driven a heightened focus on how these new technology solutions can be introduced within businesses.

It is expected that new technologies, including AI, will fundamentally change lives, with many experts predicting that whole sectors will be transformed. With alarmist reports suggesting almost eight million jobs could be at risk in a worst-case scenario over the next three to five years, it’s important to maintain perspective and consider the opportunities AI presents.

Despite the potential challenges, a recent Michael Page survey revealed a more optimistic view among workforces with 92% of respondents willing to learn more about AI viewing it as a gateway to new opportunities rather than a threat. Among those interested in AI, almost a third (29%) are driven by the ambition to move into different sectors, underscoring the versatility of AI skills.

Respondents cited a mix of compelling reasons for upskilling in AI sharing desires to:

  • Improve efficiency and productivity (78%).
  • Increase chances of being hired in their industry (45%).
  • Adapt to new roles in the future (80%).

Here, we look at how jobs are changing due to new technology, the impact on workers and the talent profile of a technologically advanced future.

How are jobs changing due to technology solutions?

AI is no longer a concept rooted in the future, with new devices, solutions, and services already becoming seamlessly integrated with many roles. According to our recent Talent Trends survey, three in 10 workers are already using AI in their current job, but many using it may not even realise. From face-ID and image recognition to technology solutions like Microsoft’s recently launched Copilot, AI is already felt in many peoples’ day-to-day lives, helping to make the workplace more productive. AI is helping to eliminate routine jobs and stripping out mundane tasks, allowing workers to focus on more important activities, ultimately delivering greater productivity and efficiency for organisations. And as new technologies emerge, this trend will only continue.

What impact are new technology solutions having on workers?

Workers are correctly identifying technology will eventually have a profound effect on their roles, with six in 10 workers citing it’s already impacting their career decisions and 53% say it’s influencing their long-term career plans.

For most businesses, the priority should be to upskill the workers so they are equipped with the skills they need when working with technologies. Even for those workers within technology roles, training is a must as skills will quickly become out of date as the relentless pace of technological development and innovation continues.

For employers, this should be a no-brainer. With opportunities for career progression and training being a priority to 29% and 27% of employees when it comes to job satisfaction, investing in training can aid with staff retention as well as helping to prepare your organisation for the technology of the future.
