Most people worry about ensuring their CV is up to date, but many forget about doing the same for their LinkedIn. In today’s digital age, it would be surprising if a recruiter or hiring manager didn’t look at your LinkedIn, so it’s important you treat your LinkedIn profile the same as your resume.
Even if you’re not actively looking for or applying for roles, it’s important to keep your profile up-to-date at all times as you never know what opportunities are around the corner.
To help, we’ve put together our top tips on how to improve your LinkedIn profile.
As noted earlier, your CV and LinkedIn are more-often-than-not the first point of contact a hiring manager will have with you. The last thing you want is for them to showcase different experiences.
Ensure that the information presented on your LinkedIn profile aligns seamlessly with your CV, especially if you’re actively job seeking. From your most recent experience to your oldest, consistency between the two documents is crucial, as it conveys professionalism and accuracy, instilling confidence in potential employers and recruiters.
In today’s competitive hiring landscape, it’s important to showcase why you would be the best candidate for the job. There’s no better way to demonstrate this than through career highlights, achievements, and accreditations.
For each work experience, aim to include a bullet point or two that exemplifies the responsibilities you’ve talked about for that role. For example, if you said you’ve successfully carried out a campaign, include metrics to back it up.
Similarly, if you work in a field of work where industry accreditations are widely recognised be sure to include these on your profile so you stand out against the crowd.
Similarly to showcasing your experience through achievements and examples, it’s important to showcase your personal brand as a job seeker. And there are plenty of opportunities to do this on your LinkedIn profile.
Utilize the summary section to highlight your unique value proposition and professional goals, emphasising your expertise and passion for your field. Create a concise and engaging story that captures your essence and showcases your value as a potential asset to any organisation. The headline is also prime real estate for showcasing your key skills and experiences that we talked about above.
Craft a captivating headline that immediately communicates your area of expertise and what sets you apart from others in your industry. Incorporate keywords relevant to your field to enhance visibility in search results.
When you first create your LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn will assign a line of numbers to your URL that will personalise your account. This doesn’t look great when linking to your profile, but this can be easily rectified.
• Go to your profile• Click ‘Edit public profile & URL’• Click ‘Edit’ under the ‘Edit URL’ section• Choose your desired URL• Save your changes
A simple change that has a big impact and adds a touch of personalisation, and professionalism, to your URL. Not only does it look better, but this will provide you with a link that is easy to share and recognisable to other professionals who may be searching for you.
This may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised by how many people upload an inappropriate photographs to LinkedIn, or worse – no photo at all! When selecting an image to use, select an image that exudes professionalism and approachability, is a high-resolution headshot with a neutral background and ensure our face is clearly visible.
Outside of what you can do on your profile, ensure you’re staying active across LinkedIn. Even though LinkedIn is different from some other social platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, it’s a useful tool to showcase your professionalism and interests to like-minded people. Therefore, it is important to post your own updates on your profile, as well as engaging with forums and discussions that interest you.
This will expand your network and provide further insight into your capabilities and personality to potential employers who may want to learn more about you than just your job history.
If you follow these simple steps, we believe you will get more out of your LinkedIn profile than before. Developing your profile is a great tool to open the door to new opportunities, build relationships, and get you thinking about your future in a totally different way.
