About South Wales Police

South Wales Police provides an emergency policing service to 1.3 million people (42% of the country’s population) including 63 of the 100 most deprived communities in Wales. The roles of uniformed officers who respond to calls and PCSOs that work out in the community are probably familiar to most people. But policing involves a wide range of different functions, many of which aren’t visible to the public but are nonetheless an essential part of how we police.

About ICT

One of those ‘behind-the-scenes’ functions is our busy ICT department. The SWP ICT department operates an in-house technical service which supports on-premise and cloud-based ICT infrastructure, including:

  • 2 modern physical datacentres
  • over 15,000 user devices
  • 200 physical and virtual servers
  • 400 back-office systems and applications

The ICT department is formed of 4 distinct sections: Service Delivery, Technical Delivery, Technical Programme Management and Technical Standards. Here’s a little info on each section:

Service Delivery

This section is responsible for providing service support and business management. Service Management incorporates an ICT Service Desk function with added responsibilities for Customer Relationship and ICT Communications. The Business management function includes contracts, procurement, financial management and ICT stores.

Technical Delivery

Technical Delivery oversees operational and day-to-day functions, including the resolution of technical issues from 2nd through to 3rd line support. This section functions like a traditional enterprise scale ICT department and covers the Networks (including core, fabric, and voice), Devices, Systems architecture and Database team.

Technical Programme Management

The Technical Programme Management (TPM) section is a centralised function within the ICT department that specialises in managing projects, programmes, and business change to achieve strategic business goals and objectives that drive business transformation and growth.

Technical Standards

The Technical Standards strand has the responsibility of overseeing the department’s strategy and compliance to standards including security and audit commitments as well as ensuring the delivery of our technical collaborative commitments. This section contains the ICT Security team as well as a bespoke team of architects and engineers working in development roles.
